The Study Abroad for Global Learning (SAGL) course is a structured learning programme that supports Stellenbosch University students participating in international mobility experiences. It accompanies students through the full study abroad journey, including preparation before departure, engagement while abroad, and structured reflection upon return.
The course frames study abroad as a transformative learning experience rather than only an academic exchange opportunity. Students are encouraged to critically engage with cultural difference, global issues, identity, and social context while developing the skills needed to navigate diverse academic and social environments.
Grounded in intercultural competence, global citizenship, Ubuntu-informed leadership, emotional intelligence, and critical reflection, the course supports students in connecting academic theory with lived experience in their host environments. Students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning and actively engage with course materials throughout their mobility experience.
